1 in every 6 children are growing up in a food insecure household. A child in the inner-city, 1 in every 5. We believe that society has failed these kids. Pittsburgh Generation of Hope looks to be a help this crisis.
Poverty has limited households from being able to purchase nutritious food. Lack of job skills lead to unemployment which makes it difficult to have the income to be able to access food.
Inner-city kids have limited options gaining access to proper nutrition. The lack of fresh food markets leads to diets filled with unhealthy options.
We work alongside other groups , private donors, and community organizations to help alleviate this problem.
We believe that mentoring is an effective way to guide children to be successful in life. Our goals are to place a child in a one-on-one relationship with a trained mentor. They would be given permission to enter this kind of relationship through an agreement with either the parent, guardian, the courts, or the school system.
Accountability will be maintained through regular check-ins and assessing if goals are being met in life. We will identify areas in the mentees’ life that need to improve.
Communication skills and active listening will be practiced. Paying attention and showing interest in a child’s life makes a difference.
We will show leadership and model it to each child. at risk children suffer because they lack solid role models in their homes.
Kids can come from all walks of life. We have no problem accepting a child who is having issues. In the past our program has worked with the criminal justice system to help rehabilitate youth. We have a goal of building meaningful relationships with the youth, so that they can become productive in life.
The mentee would be able to experience fun things like going out to eat, a fun event (sports event, Kennywood, wave pool). Other activities would include post high school exploration and career guidance as well as employment assistance. The mentor would devote a couple hours a week to the relationship. All mentors will be trained and will be expected to have all security clearances in place before working with a child.
